I had only secured a room for a few days at 136-39 59th, so I had to keep looking for longer-term sublets. I knew I had the option of staying, but I was hoping to find a single room that would be mine for the month. One of the responses I received from my initial queries was from another guy in Flushing, who was subletting a room in he and his roommates’ apartment for July. I had forgotten to respond to his initial email and then a few days later he emailed again, this time reducing the rent request by $125. I got back to him this time and he gave me the address to come see it: 136-11 58th Avenue. This was a 5 minute walk from 136-39 59th, so we met up and I agreed to the room, amazed at the randomness of securing two rooms in Flushing within minutes of each other. The room didn’t have a bed, but they told me they could secure one for me.
I moved out of 139-36 59th and into 136-11 58th on July 1st. My room was small, maybe 15′x12′ with a dresser and a small cabinet. When I arrived the promised bed was not there, but I was given an air mattress to sleep on that is serving my needs until a real bed is (hopefully) delivered. When I came to see the room, I had met two of the roommates and then I met the third on the night I moved in. One was a musician, one a photographer and the other a graphic designer. One of the very weird feelings I had when I moved in was thinking this experience would feel like living with myself when I was in my 20s, as my three roommates are all at least 10 years younger than me. We all like the same music and we seem to share similar vices, so I am expecting a month of indulgence and considerable introspection.
